MEET HALO PROFILE: Oliver Hartkopp
A 29-year-old Danish surfer, adventurer, and seeker of cold-water waves in remote, rugged coastlines.
His everyday missions are shaped by freedom and focus: to stay open to the unknown, to respond rather than control, and to keep chasing the feeling that comes when everything aligns — wind, water, mindset. Oliver doesn’t force movement — he works with it. He listens to nature’s signals, follows momentum over routine, and lets the journey shape the outcome. Out there, presence is everything.
Living in Denmark, Oliver is used to unpredictable weather — shifting winds, sudden squalls, and the kind of forecasts that change by the hour. But his recent trip to northern Norway took that unpredictability to another level. “Norway has always been an incredibly fascinating place to me, and I truly feel that the possibilities for adventure there are endless. It’s a vast country with an extremely long and rugged coastline that’s difficult to access – just waiting to be explored.
“Norway is a harsh country – low-pressure systems, storms, and ever-changing weather are constantly in motion. One moment it’s sunny and completely calm, and the next you’re caught in a snowstorm with winds hitting 20 m/s. That basically sums up our trip as we headed further and further north. After more than 20 hours of driving, we finally reached the coast – and that’s when it started snowing.
We didn’t know then that it wouldn’t stop for seven days and that several meters of snow would fall. We were hit by two “Polar Lows” – Arctic storm systems with heavy snow, wind, and extreme cold. We ended up trapped in a small town for over two days, stuck in our cars because avalanches had closed all the roads.”
“I had the chance to test the gear in some of the most extreme weather conditions imaginable. One day we had -13°C, gusts up to 17 m/s, snow up to our waists, and so much blowing snow that we had to wear ski goggles just to check the waves. That day we hiked for an hour, and I remember thinking on the way back, “Wow, I’m actually super warm, not wet at all, and perfectly comfortable in this gear” – which genuinely surprised me in a good way.
Another day I skied down a mountain we had just spent four hours climbing, wearing only a fleece under a shell jacket and shell pants. I truly put the gear to the test – and it kept me warm, dry, and comfortable. It did the job perfectly.”
“I spent the first many years of my life in Ålsgårde, North Zealand, until I moved away from home when I was 16 years old. Back then, several months would go by without waves – and when the conditions were finally right, I remember we’d be out all day, buzzing with excitement. That taught me to never take good surf for granted and definitely shaped me into the surfer I am today. We never knew when we’d get the chance to surf again.
On top of that, I love geeking out over things – and I’ve spent a lot of time obsessing over surfing and figuring out how to get better, how to reach a level no one else here in Denmark had reached before. It’s probably a combination of passion, persistence, and a lot of curiosity, that’s helped shape my path.”
“My lifestyle is probably best described as a constant search for the next wave, the next surf trip, the next adventure – whatever lies ahead. I’ve always been curious by nature and love discovering new places, sports, and experiences. I live very much day by day and find it difficult to plan far into the future. I just don’t want to lock myself down with too many commitments – what if the perfect forecast drops and I need to chase the best waves?“
